Coggeshall family papers, 1771-1902 (bulk 1804-1834).

Papers chiefly consist of typewritten transcriptions and photocopies of correspondence. The bulk of the letters are written from Newport (R.I.), Georgetown (S.C.), Colchester (Conn.), Darlington (S.C.), and elsewhere. Topics include shipping of goods to South Carolina and other business matters, the embargo of 1808, religion, family matters, sheep farming in Connecticut, financial troubles, and the purchase of a house and plantation in Darlington (S.C.). Principal correspondents include Nathaniel Coggeshall (1765-1833) and Rebecca Coggeshall (1767-1848). Twentieth century correspondence consists of two letters (1901, 1902) from Charles Pierce Coggeshall in Brookline (Mass.) to Dr. Julien T. Coggeshall in Hartsville (S.C.) concerning Coggeshall family history. Other transcribed and photocopied items include articles of agreement (1813) between Nathan Starks and Nathaniel Coggeshall regarding the pasturing and keeping of sheep; a bill of lading (1817) for goods shipped from New York (N.Y.) to N. Coggeshall & Son at Georgetown (S.C.) on the schooner Orion; and an invoice (1790s) for clothing, tools, and other goods bought of William Stephen by Peter Coggeshall (1758-1795) and Nathaniel Coggeshall (1765-1833) at Charleston (S.C.).
